A closer look at the River Wear

The River Wear runs for 60 miles (96 km) through County Durham to the North Sea at Sunderland. It becomes tidal and navigable at Chester-le-Street, then flows through Sunderland beneath the Northern Spire and Wearmouth bridges to its mouth at Roker. The Port of Sunderland is the navigation authority for the lower river.

Above the tidal reach the river winds through Durham, which is a rowing centre rather than a place for cruising boats: the Durham Regatta is older than Henley, and the city has 14 boathouses and 20 boat clubs.

Moorings on the River Wear are centred on Sunderland Marina at Roker, at the mouth of the river, which has access to the open sea at all states of tide. It has pontoon berths and fore-and-aft moorings, and is owned by and run alongside Adventure Sunderland, an independent charitable trust. Facilities include a fuel berth, a slipway, water and electricity, and staff are on site around the clock. Two RNLI lifeboats are also based at the marina.
