Help & FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about finding, enquiring about, booking and bidding on long-term moorings on MoorHub.
Getting started
What is MoorHub?
MoorHub is a UK marketplace for long-term boat moorings across England, Scotland and Wales. You can browse marina, river, canal, coastal and private moorings, compare individual berths, and then either book at a fixed price or bid in an auction, directly with the mooring operator.
Is MoorHub free for boat owners?
Yes. Searching, saving favourites, sending enquiries, booking and bidding are all free for boat owners. Prices on listings are set by the operator, and any payment is made directly to the operator once they accept your booking.
Do I need an account?
Not to browse or search. You need a free account to save favourites, add your boats, send enquiries to operators, request bookings and place bids.
Who can create an account?
Anyone aged 18 or over. You can sign up with an email address and password, or with your Google account. To book or bid you'll also need to add your date of birth to your profile.
Searching & listings
How do I search for a mooring?
Choose a location or waterway (or use your current location) and set a search radius. You can then filter by site type, berth use, facilities, availability, price and your boat's length, width and draught. Results are shown as a list and on a map, and can be sorted by featured, name, distance or price.
What's the difference between a mooring site, a berth and a vacancy?
A mooring site is the place, such as a marina, canal bank or wharf. A berth is an individual space at that site, with its own maximum dimensions and facilities. A vacancy is a berth that's currently on offer, with a price, contract length, start date, and either a fixed 'Book now' price or an auction.
What types of mooring are listed?
Mooring sites are listed as Marina, River, Canal, Coastal or Private. Individual berths are marked for leisure, residential or commercial use.
Can I live aboard?
Look for berths marked as Residential, which you can filter for in search. Whether living aboard is allowed is decided by the operator and local rules, so always check the listing and confirm with the operator.
What does the listed price cover?
The price shown on a vacancy is for the whole contract length shown alongside it, for example a '12 month contract'. Services such as electricity or pump-out may be charged separately, so check the details with the operator.
How long are mooring contracts?
Each operator sets the contract length for each vacancy and it's shown on the listing. If you see 'Term to be confirmed', the operator hasn't set a length yet, so ask them before you apply.
What do 'Available now' and 'Available soon' mean?
'Available now' means the berth's start date has already passed and you could move in straight away once your booking is accepted. 'Available soon' means the berth becomes available on a future date, which is shown on the listing.
Which facilities are shown?
Facilities are listed for each berth and can include electricity, drinking water, pump out, Elsan disposal, showers, toilets, WiFi, laundry, car parking, onsite storage, hard standing and refuse disposal. If you select several facilities in search, you'll only see berths that have all of them.
Why can't I search by place name or see the map?
Place-name lookup and maps are provided by Mapbox, which needs Functionality cookies. You can turn these on in your cookie preferences, or use 'Use my location' instead.
Your boats
Why should I add my boat?
Your saved boat's dimensions can be used to fill in the search filters so you only see berths that fit. You'll also need to choose one of your saved boats when you request a booking.
What details do I need to add?
Your boat's name, its length, width (beam) and draught, and optionally its boat number or registration. Dimensions can be entered in metres or feet.
What happens if my boat doesn't fit a berth?
You won't be able to book a berth if your boat is longer, wider or has a deeper draught than the berth's maximum dimensions.
Favourites & alerts
How do I save a mooring?
While logged in, tap the heart icon on a mooring site. Your saved sites appear on your Favourites page along with their availability and starting price. You can remove them at any time.
Can I be told when a favourite site has a vacancy?
Yes. New vacancy alerts for your favourite sites are switched on by default. You can turn them off in the email preferences on your profile.
Contacting operators
How do I contact a mooring operator?
Use the Enquire option on the mooring site page while logged in. Your name, email, phone number and message (up to 2,000 characters) are sent to the operator.
How will the operator reply?
Operators reply directly by email or phone, outside MoorHub. There is no in-app messaging.
Can I mention health or accessibility needs in an enquiry?
Yes. If your message includes information like this, tick the optional consent box so we have your permission to share it with the operator.
Why can't I send an enquiry to a site?
Some operators aren't currently accepting enquiries through MoorHub. You can still view their listings and request a booking where a vacancy is available.
Booking a mooring
How do I book a mooring?
On a 'Book now' vacancy, select 'Book this berth'. Confirm your contact details, date of birth and address, choose a saved boat that fits the berth, and accept the operator's terms. This sends a booking request to the operator.
Is my booking confirmed straight away?
No. Your booking is 'Pending review' while the operator considers it. They will then accept or reject it, sometimes with a reason. You can follow its progress in My bookings.
How long does the operator have to respond?
Operators have a set period to respond to booking requests. If they don't respond in time, the request is cancelled automatically.
When and how do I pay?
Payment isn't taken through MoorHub. Once the operator accepts your booking, they'll contact you directly about payment and signing their mooring contract.
What details does the operator see?
The operator receives the name, email, phone number, address, date of birth and boat details you submit with your booking request.
Can I cancel a booking request?
Yes, while it's still 'Pending review' you can cancel it from My bookings. Once it has been accepted or rejected it can't be cancelled on MoorHub, so contact the operator directly.
Can other people apply for the same berth?
Yes. An operator may receive several requests for the same vacancy and chooses which to accept. You can only have one active request per vacancy.
Auctions
How do mooring auctions work?
Some operators auction a vacancy instead of offering it at a fixed price. Each auction has a starting price and a fixed end time. Bids must be more than the starting price. The highest bidder when the auction closes wins the right to apply for the berth.
How does bidding work?
Enter the maximum you're willing to pay, which must be more than the starting price, or than the current bid once bidding has started. We bid on your behalf in £5 steps, only as far as needed to keep you in the lead, up to your maximum. If two people enter the same maximum, whoever bid first stays ahead.
Can other people see my bid?
Everyone can see the current bid, starting price, number of bidders and time remaining. Bidder identities and maximum bids are not shown to other bidders or to the mooring operator. If the winner does not go ahead and the mooring is offered to you instead, it is offered at your maximum bid.
Can I change or withdraw my bid?
You can raise your maximum bid at any time while the auction is live. Bids can't be withdrawn.
Do auctions extend if someone bids at the last minute?
No. Auctions end at the time shown on the listing, and bids after that aren't accepted.
I won an auction. What happens next?
By confirming a bid you commit to taking the berth if you win. Go to My auctions and complete your application before the deadline shown. The operator then reviews it in the same way as a normal booking request.
What if I don't complete my application in time?
You'll lose the berth, and the operator may offer it to the next highest bidder instead.
What do I need before I can bid?
You need to be logged in and have your date of birth on your profile, as bidders must be 18 or over.
Your account & privacy
How do I update my profile?
On your Profile page you can edit your name, email (confirmed via a link sent to the new address), phone, date of birth, address and preferred contact method. You can also add a profile photo in JPEG, PNG, WebP or GIF format up to 5 MB. Operators see your name and preferred contact method when you enquire or book.
I've forgotten my password. What do I do?
Use 'Forgot password' on the login page to receive a reset link by email. If you signed up with Google, you don't have a MoorHub password, so sign in with Google instead.
Which emails will I receive?
Emails about your bookings and auctions are always sent. MoorHub marketing updates are off unless you opt in, and new vacancy alerts for favourites can be switched off in your email preferences.
How do I close my account?
Go to your Profile and use the Close account option. Closing your account is immediate and can't be undone. You can't close it while a booking request is pending review or while you have a bid on a live auction, and any auction you've won but not yet booked will be forfeited.
What happens to my data when I close my account?
Your profile, boats, favourites, alerts, enquiries and uploaded files are deleted. Operators keep records of bookings they accepted or rejected, without your address or date of birth, and bids are kept without being linked to you.
Why am I being asked to accept the terms again?
When our Terms and Conditions or Acceptable Use Policy change significantly, we ask you to review and accept the new version before continuing.
What cookies does MoorHub use?
Strictly necessary cookies are always on. Functionality cookies (for maps) and Analytics cookies (Google Analytics, never used for advertising) are optional, and you can change your choice at any time in your cookie preferences.
