A closer look at Northumberland and Tyne and Wear coast
This coast runs from Berwick-upon-Tweed near the Scottish border south past the Northumberland harbours to the mouths of the Tyne and the Wear. It faces the open North Sea, so most moorings in Northumberland and Tyne and Wear are in marinas and sheltered harbours, and some can only be entered for a few hours either side of high water.
At Berwick, the port at Tweed Dock in Tweedmouth is run by the Berwick Harbour Commission, which has a serviced pontoon for leisure craft. Amble Marina, at the mouth of the Coquet, is reached through Warkworth Harbour over a natural bar and then a sill, which most boats can cross for about three hours either side of high water, longer on neap tides and for shallower boats, and the Coquet Yacht Club is next door. Blyth is a trust port run by the Blyth Harbour Commission, and the Royal Northumberland Yacht Club, based in the South Harbour, has pontoons that take visiting yachts of up to 15 metres.
The Port of Tyne, also a trust port, is the navigation authority for the tidal Tyne from its mouth to the Tidal Stone at Wylam, 17 miles upstream. Royal Quays Marina at North Shields occupies the former Albert Edward Dock. St Peter's Marina, about seven and a half miles upstream and less than a mile from Newcastle city centre, is tidal and can be entered about three hours either side of high water, and Newcastle City Marina has floating pontoons on the Quayside between the Tyne Bridge and the Millennium Bridge.
The Port of Sunderland is owned by the city council. Sunderland Marina, at the mouth of the Wear at Roker, gives access to the open sea at all states of the tide and has pontoon berths and fore-and-aft moorings. It is owned by and run alongside a charitable trust, Adventure Sunderland, and is staffed 24 hours a day.
