A closer look at the Stourbridge Canal
The Stourbridge Canal climbs from Stourton Junction on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal through Wordsley to Black Delph, where it meets the Dudley Canal at the Delph Locks. Its best-known feature is a flight of 16 locks between Wordsley Junction and Leys Junction, near the Red House Glass Cone, one of four glass-making cones left in the UK. At Wordsley Junction a lock-free town arm runs for just over a mile into Stourbridge, ending at the basin beside the Bonded Warehouse, and the short Fens Branch leaves the main line at Leys Junction.
The Canal & River Trust manages the canal, which has 20 locks in all and takes narrowboats up to 72 feet long. It is open for leisure boating and forms part of the 74-mile Stourport Ring. A breach during flooding on the River Stour in 2008 closed it for repairs until December that year.
Moorings on the Stourbridge Canal are centred on the town arm. The Bonded Warehouse at Stourbridge Basin, home of the Stourbridge Navigation Trust, has a secure mooring area for permanent and visiting boats, and there are visitor moorings on the arm between the weir and the water point.
