A closer look at the Rushall Canal & Daw End Branch

The Rushall Canal and the Daw End Branch together link the Tame Valley Canal with the Wyrley & Essington Canal near Brownhills. The Rushall Canal runs 2.75 miles (4.4 km) from Rushall Junction on the Tame Valley Canal up a flight of nine locks, which raise it 65 feet, to Longwood Junction. From there the lock-free Daw End Branch continues for 5.25 miles (8.45 km) past Daw End, Aldridge and Walsall Wood to Catshill Junction on the Wyrley & Essington.

Both are part of the Birmingham Canal Navigations and are managed by the Canal & River Trust. They are narrow canals, taking boats up to 72 feet long and 7 feet wide. Near Longwood Junction the route passes the Hay Head Nature Reserve, on the site of a former limestone quarry.

Moorings on the Rushall Canal and Daw End Branch include Aldridge Marina on Brickyard Road, which offers private moorings with a gated car park, electric hook-up, water and pump-out, and there are visitor moorings nearby at Daw End. Longwood Boat Club uses a building by the top lock of the Rushall flight as its club house.
