A closer look at the River Welland

The River Welland runs 105 kilometres from Sibbertoft in Northamptonshire to The Wash. Its navigable length runs from The Wash up the Welland Cut past Fosdyke to Spalding in Lincolnshire, and in the past boats went as far as Stamford.

The Environment Agency is the navigation authority from Stamford to just below Fosdyke Bridge. The river is tidal for 14 miles below Spalding, where Fulney Lock, built in 1953 with the Coronation Channel, keeps the tide out of the upper river. Vessels up to 110 by 30 feet drawing 8 feet can reach Fulney Lock at high water, but above it boats are limited to 35 feet in length. The tide runs fast in the Welland, especially on springs, and boats coming in from The Wash are advised not to begin the approach before half flood and to arrive at slack water or on the ebb.

Moorings on the River Welland are mainly at Fosdyke Yacht Haven, about six nautical miles up the Welland Cut from the Tabs Head tide gauge, where old wharves have been turned into yacht moorings. The haven has pontoons with water and electricity, diesel, pump-out, showers and laundry, and can lift out or launch boats of up to 50 tonnes. Upriver, Spalding has a water taxi service on the river.
