A closer look at the River Ure Navigation & Ripon Canal
This navigation takes boats on from the Yorkshire Ouse into North Yorkshire. The river changes its name from Ouse to Ure at Cuddy Shaw Reach near Linton-on-Ouse, and the navigation follows the Ure upstream past the Swale confluence at Swale Nab and through Boroughbridge to Oxclose Lock, where the Ripon Canal begins. The canal then runs 2.3 miles (3.7 km) to Ripon Basin, close to the centre of the city.
The Canal & River Trust is the navigation authority for the whole route, which passed to British Waterways from the Linton Lock Navigation Commissioners in 1999. The river section has two locks, Milby Lock beside the weir at Boroughbridge and Westwick Lock, and the canal has three more: Oxclose, Bell Furrows and Rhodesfield. The Ripon Canal closed in 1956 and was reopened in stages by volunteers, fully so in 1996. Boats arrive from York by way of Linton Lock on the Ouse.
Moorings on the Ure and the Ripon Canal are concentrated at Boroughbridge and along the canal. Boroughbridge Marina lies on the Ure on the Ripon side of the town, which also has visitor moorings and boater facilities. On the canal, Ripon Motor Boat Club has a marina between Oxclose and Bell Furrows locks, and Ripon Marina sits just below Bell Furrows Lock. There are short-stay visitor moorings near the terminal basin in Ripon.
