A closer look at the River Lark
The River Lark is a tributary of the Great Ouse on the edge of the Fens. The river is about 50 kilometres long, but only its lower 16 kilometres are navigable, from its junction with the Great Ouse near Littleport up to Jude's Ferry. Boats reach it from the Great Ouse.
The Environment Agency is the navigation authority, and boats need its licence. Isleham Lock is the only working lock on the navigation. The river once carried boats up to Fornham Dock at Bury St Edmunds, and the locks at Barton Mills and Icklingham were rebuilt in the 1960s, but the A11 road bridge has since cut them off from the navigable river, and proposals to restore navigation to Bury St Edmunds have not been carried out.
Moorings on the River Lark include a large marina at Isleham and other moorings along the navigable stretch between Littleport and Jude's Ferry.
