A closer look at the Huddersfield Broad Canal
The Huddersfield Broad Canal runs for a little under four miles from Cooper Bridge Junction, where it leaves the Calder & Hebble Navigation, to Aspley Basin in Huddersfield. At the basin it meets the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, which continues west from the town.
The Canal & River Trust manages the canal, which has nine wide locks taking boats up to 57 feet 6 inches long and 14 feet 2 inches wide. One of its landmarks is the Turnbridge Loco Lift Bridge, built in 1865, which lifts vertically and has been electrically operated since 2002. At the Huddersfield end, a concrete tunnel under Wakefield Road only takes boats narrower than 7 feet, and in practice this marks the end of the broad canal.
Moorings on the Huddersfield Broad Canal are mostly at the town end. Aspley Basin has moorings with water and electricity and a card-operated pump-out, Aspley Bankside Moorings lie just below the basin, and Aspley Wharf Marina offers pontoon berths at the basin where the Broad and Narrow canals meet.
