A closer look at Weymouth

Weymouth is a harbour town on the Dorset coast, where the River Wey runs out into Weymouth Bay. Moorings in Weymouth are in one harbour run by Dorset Council: the council's own berths and Weymouth Marina share the Inner Harbour, which lies beyond a lifting road bridge.

Moorings in Weymouth

  • Weymouth Harbour marina berths: Dorset Council pontoons at North Quay and Westwey Road, for boats up to 20m, with water and electricity. Anyone may apply, using the council's online form.
  • Chain and sinker moorings: along Westwey Road, for boats up to 6.5m, and only for residents of the DT3, DT4 and DT5 postcodes. The council's waiting list for them was closed in October 2026.
  • Weymouth Marina: run by Premier Marinas, which bought boatfolk in September 2025 and brought the marina into its own network in March 2026. It has a boatyard with lift-out and storage ashore.

Dorset Council says its harbour berths take more than 400 vessels in all, including berths for personal watercraft.

On the water

Dorset Council is the harbour authority, and Weymouth Harbour Radio works on VHF channel 12. A speed limit of 4 knots applies in the Inner and Outer Harbour. Traffic signals on the South Pier control the entrance when movement is restricted.

  • Town Bridge: a bascule bridge with a charted clearance of 2.75m when shut, so most boats berthed in the Inner Harbour need a lift to get in or out.
  • Summer lifts: every two hours from 8am to 8pm between 15 April and 15 September, with a 9pm lift in June, July and August.
  • Winter lifts: every two hours from 8am to 6pm between 16 September and 14 April, and only with at least one hour's notice. There are no lifts on Christmas Day or New Year's Day.
  • Waiting: there is a free waiting pontoon on the port side just before the bridge. Be in sight of the bridge operator by the lift time.

Getting there and around

Weymouth railway station is about ten minutes' walk from Weymouth Marina. Portland, across the bay to the south, has its own page.
