Location guide

A closer look at Stone

Stone is a canal town in Staffordshire on the Trent & Mersey Canal, between Great Haywood Junction and Etruria in Stoke-on-Trent. Moorings in Stone are mostly at Aston Marina on the southern edge of the town, with a working boatyard at Stone Wharf in the centre.

Moorings in Stone

  • Aston Marina: a family-run marina beside Aston Lock, just south of the town, with 200 berths for narrowboats up to 70ft. Each berth has metered electricity and water.
  • Aston Marina berths are leisure moorings: the marina allows up to 120 days a year on board. On site are showers, laundry, pump-out, diesel, a chandlery, a workshop and a slipway trailer.
  • Canal Cruising Company, Stone Wharf: a hire fleet and boatyard on Crown Street with covered dry docks, repairs, diesel, gas and pump-out. It advertises moorings by enquiry and publishes no details.

The Canal & River Trust's Waterside Moorings search showed no long-term towpath site of its own within eight miles of Stone on 7 October 2026. The town's visitor moorings are short stay only.

On the water

The Trent & Mersey Canal is run by the Canal & River Trust, and a boat needs the Trust's licence. Through Stone it is a narrow canal: the largest boat is 72ft long and 7ft wide, with a draught of 3ft 7in.

  • Stone locks: four locks climb through the town, from Star Lock (Lock 27) by the visitor moorings, past Yard Lock (Lock 28) at Stone Wharf, to Lock 30.
  • Meaford locks: four more, Locks 31 to 34, lift the canal just under 10 metres north of the town.
  • Aston Lock (Lock 26) is beside the marina, so a berth holder there heading north works all nine locks.
  • Carry a handcuff key: the Trust fits anti-vandal locks along this canal.

Floods and closures

The Trust repairs these locks in winter. Star Lock was closed from 3 November to 15 December 2025 for new bottom gates, and Aston Lock from 14 to 28 January 2026.

In the dry summer of 2026 the Trust locked the flights overnight to save water: from 29 July to 1 September, Yard Lock to Meaford Top Lock was closed from 6pm to 9am each day.
