Moorings in Portsmouth are split between two harbours. Portsmouth Harbour, on the west side of the city and shared with Gosport, holds more than 5,000 recreational vessels. Langstone Harbour lies to the east, between Portsmouth and Hayling Island. Most long-term berths are at three Premier Marinas sites, with council quay berths in Old Portsmouth and harbour board moorings at Eastney.
Moorings in Portsmouth
- Port Solent Marina: Premier Marinas. A locked basin in Portchester Lake, in the upper reaches of Portsmouth Harbour, taking boats up to 24m. The lock is worked 24 hours a day.
- Southsea Marina: Premier Marinas, on Langstone Harbour, for boats up to 17m. An automatic cill gate gives around six hours of access per tide, with a waiting pontoon by the entrance.
- Trafalgar Wharf: Premier Marinas, in Portchester Lake behind Portchester Castle. Indoor dry stack for more than 300 motorboats and RIBs from 4m to 13m.
- Gunwharf Quays Marina: on the Portsmouth shore close to the harbour entrance.
- Camber Quay, Old Portsmouth: part of the city council's Portsmouth International Port. Some 15 to 20 boats lie along the quay walls and KB Boat Park has dry berths. Apply to Ken Brown Boats, the managing agent.
- Langstone Harbour Board moorings: around 600 in the harbour. Deep water moorings are zoned by distance from the Eastney Point and Ferry Point pontoons, with intertidal moorings in Eastney Lake. Apply to the board.
On the water
- Harbour authority: the King's Harbour Master runs the Dockyard Port of Portsmouth, which covers Portsmouth Harbour. No mooring may be laid in it without his consent.
- Small Boat Channel: boats under 20m must enter and leave Portsmouth Harbour by this 50m wide channel on the western side of the entrance, under power if they have an engine.
- Reaching Gunwharf Quays or the Camber: cross the main channel only north of Ballast Pile, after getting permission from the King's Harbour Master on VHF Channel 11.
- Speed limit: 10 knots through the water inside Portsmouth Harbour and within 1,000 yards of the shore.
- Langstone Harbour: run by Langstone Harbour Board. Every vessel using it pays harbour dues to the board. At Southsea Marina they are covered by the mooring charge.
Gosport, on the far side of Portsmouth Harbour, and Fareham have their own pages.
