Location guide

A closer look at Nantwich

Nantwich is a market town in Cheshire East, on the River Weaver. Moorings in Nantwich are on the Shropshire Union Canal, which passes the west side of the town on an embankment. The Llangollen Canal joins it at Hurleston Junction, about two miles north of Nantwich Basin.

Moorings in Nantwich

  • Nantwich Canal Centre: the ABC boatyard at Basin End, Chester Road, with a dry dock, boat repairs, boat sales, a chandlery and a cafe. Ask the centre directly about berths in the basin.
  • Nantwich long-term moorings: a Canal & River Trust towpath site about 250m long for up to 10 boats, south of Nantwich Aqueduct and half a mile from the town centre. Leisure use only, with no car park.
  • Swanley Bridge Marina: a family-run marina with 309 berths on the Llangollen Canal, about 40 minutes by boat from Hurleston Junction. It has diesel, pump out, a boat hoist, a slipway and a chandlery.
  • Barbridge: the Trust also lets a few towpath berths near Barbridge Junction, about three miles north of the basin, where the Middlewich Branch leaves the main line.

On the water

The Canal & River Trust runs both canals. Nantwich Basin was the original end of the Chester Canal. The line south was added by the Birmingham and Liverpool Junction Canal, completed in 1835, and leaves on a long embankment with an aqueduct over the Chester road.

  • Llangollen Canal: starts with four locks at Hurleston and takes boats up to 70ft long and 6ft 10in wide. Fenders have to be lifted in the locks there.
  • Services: the Trust has a facilities block near Bridge 92 with water and pump out, which needs a Trust key. The wharf by the basin is listed as selling diesel, gas and coal.
  • Winter 2027 closure: the Trust plans to close the canal and towpath between Bridge 92 (Nantwich Junction Bridge) and Nantwich Aqueduct from 4 January to 12 March 2027, to replace a culvert.

Getting there and around

Nantwich station is on the line between Crewe and Shrewsbury, served mainly by Transport for Wales. The basin is on Chester Road, the A534. The Trust's towpath moorings by the aqueduct have no car park, so owners park on the public road.
