Location guide

A closer look at Lincoln

Moorings in Lincoln are centred on Brayford Pool, the city centre harbour where the Fossdyke Navigation meets the River Witham. The Lincolnshire city also has Canal & River Trust moorings on the Fossdyke beside the pool, and a large marina two miles west at Burton Waters.

Moorings in Lincoln

  • Brayford Pool (Brayford Trust): more than 130 long-term leisure moorings on floating pontoons with water and shore power, for narrowboats, cruisers and wide beams. Not for residential use.
  • Lincoln Topside (Canal & River Trust): 20 leisure moorings along about 170 metres of the Fossdyke west of Brayford Pool. No parking for leisure moorers.
  • Lincoln Lowside (Canal & River Trust): 16 leisure moorings beside the university halls, between Brayford Pool and the Trust's facilities, with water, Elsan and pump out close by.
  • Burton Waters Marina (Burton Waters Marina Ltd): more than 200 moorings beside the Fossdyke, about two miles by water from the city centre, with a hoist, slipway, fuel and dry berthing ashore.

The City of Lincoln Council owns the freehold of Brayford Pool and in 2010 leased it for 125 years to the Brayford Trust, a charity. The Trust lets the moorings through its Harbour Office at Cygnet Wharf, and the Canal & River Trust maintains the navigable channel through the pool.

On the water

  • Licence: the Fossdyke and the Witham are Canal & River Trust waterways, and every boat on them needs a Trust licence. The speed limit in Brayford Pool is 3mph.
  • The Glory Hole: the arch that carries the Witham through an old building in the city. The Trust gives headroom of 2.74m (9ft) between Lincoln and Stamp End Lock, the lowest on the way to Boston.
  • Stamp End Lock: lock 1 on the Witham. Below it the limits are 21.41m (70ft 3in) long and 5.3m (17ft 4in) wide, with 3.5m (11ft 6in) of headroom.
  • To the Trent: the Fossdyke runs 11.3 miles to Torksey Lock, its only lock, for craft up to 21.3m by 4.67m. The lock is worked 7am to 9pm in summer and 8am to 4pm in winter, booked 48 hours ahead.
  • To Boston: the Witham is 36.5 miles long with five locks, ending at Boston Grand Sluice. Passage there is arranged with the lock keeper, and craft over 45ft leave on the second level, two hours after high tide.
