Leamington Spa is a Warwickshire town on the Grand Union Canal, which passes along its southern side, parallel to the River Leam, and crosses the River Avon on the way to Warwick. Moorings in Leamington Spa itself are mostly short stay: the long-term sites named here are a few miles east of the town or next door in Warwick.
Moorings near Leamington Spa
- Fosse Locks: a Canal & River Trust towpath site three and a half miles east, on the A425 through Radford Semele. About 180m long, for up to 4 boats, with a water point but no car park.
- Bascote Wharf: a Trust site just over four miles east, about 115m long, for up to 3 boats on the offside bank. There is no facilities block and the gate needs a Trust key.
- Saltisford Canal Arm: a short arm in Warwick, just below the Hatton lock flight, run by the Saltisford Canal Trust, a registered charity. It has short-term and long-term moorings and a small chandlery.
- Stockton Top Marina: at the top of the Stockton flight, well to the east. Kate Boats has worked only from here since selling its Warwick base in 2024, and does blacking, painting and engine work.
On the water
The canal through the town is level. Radford Bottom Lock is under three miles east of the Myton moorings and Cape Bottom Lock about two miles west, in Warwick. Beyond Warwick is the Hatton flight of 21 locks. Going east, there are 23 locks to Napton Junction.
This stretch opened in 1799 as the Warwick and Napton Canal. The Canal & River Trust runs it and every boat needs a licence.
Getting there and around
Leamington Spa railway station is on Old Warwick Road, at the southern edge of the town centre, with Chiltern Railways trains to London Marylebone and Birmingham. The Trust says the Fosse Locks site has no car park, though a space can normally be found on Fosse Way.
