Location guide

A closer look at Largs

Largs is a town in North Ayrshire on the east shore of the Firth of Clyde, sheltered by the island of Great Cumbrae. Moorings in Largs mean, for most owners, a pontoon berth at Largs Yacht Haven on the south side of the town, with swinging moorings and boat storage at Fairlie Quay to the south.

Moorings in Largs

  • Largs Yacht Haven: more than 700 pontoon berths, run by Yacht Havens Group and open at all states of the tide. Berths take boats up to 20 metres, and annual contracts can start on the first of any month.
  • Largs Yacht Haven boatyard: 75 ton and 70 ton hoists, room for up to 300 boats ashore, and dry berthing with a slipway launch for boats up to 8 metres.
  • Fairlie Quay Marina: south of the Yacht Haven at Fairlie, with 24 serviced swinging moorings, an 80 ton hoist and 5,500 square metres of undercover storage. It has no marina pontoon berths.

There are no harbour authority moorings to apply for here. Laying a private mooring in Scotland needs a licence from Crown Estate Scotland, issued to an individual, a business or a moorings association, and navigation consent as well. On the Clyde, applications are handled by the Clyde Moorings Committee.

On the water

Largs lies within the waters of Clydeport, the Clyde harbour authority and part of Peel Ports. Its standing notices apply to leisure boats, and its marine leisure guide for the Firth of Clyde is free to download.

  • Shipping: a boat under 20 metres must not impede any vessel in the main channels, or one approaching or leaving a pier, jetty or anchorage.
  • Speed: Clydeport's recommended maximum from Cumbrae Elbow Light to Cloch Point is 19 knots, with care asked for near moorings, piers and beaches.
  • Depth: the Yacht Haven gives a depth of 2.5 metres, with some deeper berths at 3 metres below chart datum.
  • Entrance: a lit safe water mark lies off the Yacht Haven and lights mark both breakwaters. The marina answers on VHF channel 80.

Getting there and around

Largs station is two miles from the Yacht Haven, with an hourly train to Glasgow that takes 50 minutes. The marina is staffed day and night, and Largs Sailing Club is based there.
