Location guide

A closer look at Kidderminster

Kidderminster is a Worcestershire town on the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal, about four and a half miles by water above the canal's basins at Stourport-on-Severn. Moorings in Kidderminster are limited to one small Canal & River Trust site in the town, so many owners also look at the basins and the river marina at Stourport.

Moorings in Kidderminster

  • Round Hill Wharf: a Canal & River Trust leisure site inside a private housing development, about a mile from the town centre. Up to five boats on offside floating pontoons, with electricity, water and Elsan disposal.
  • Stourport Basins: the Canal & River Trust has 40 leisure berths across the upper and lower basins at Stourport-on-Severn, on pontoons and against the basin wall, with electricity and water.
  • Stourport Marina: run by Tingdene on the River Severn at Stourport, with 130 pontoon moorings for narrowboats, wide beams and river cruisers, plus a slipway and hardstanding.

The Trust's sites are let for leisure use and are not suitable for living aboard full time. Round Hill Wharf has gated access and secured parking, and viewing is by appointment. Towpath moorings in the town centre, near Kidderminster Lock and beside the canalside Sainsbury's, are short stay only.

On the water

The Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal runs for 46 miles and 43 locks from the River Severn at Stourport to the Trent & Mersey Canal at Great Haywood. It is a narrow canal: the Canal & River Trust gives the largest boat as 21.95m (72ft) long and 2.13m (7ft) wide, with a draught of 0.99m, so a wide beam kept on the Severn cannot come up to Kidderminster.

  • Kidderminster Lock is Lock 6, in the town centre.
  • Anti-vandal locks are fitted along the canal, so carry a handcuff key.
  • The Canal & River Trust is the navigation authority and publishes stoppage notices for the canal.
  • Boaters report the nearest water point at Caldwall Mill Bridge, south of the town centre.
