Location guide

A closer look at Gosport

Moorings in Gosport line the west shore of Portsmouth Harbour, facing Portsmouth across the water. Three marinas sit a short way inside the harbour entrance, and further up, off Hardway, there are swinging moorings run by a boatyard and a sailing club. The whole harbour is a naval dockyard port, so small craft follow rules set by the King's Harbour Master.

Moorings in Gosport

  • Haslar Marina: Premier Marinas, on a peninsula reached straight from the small boat channel, with a boatyard and fuel pontoon.
  • Haslar's operator: it was a boatfolk marina until Premier bought that group in 2025, and it joined the Premier network that December.
  • Gosport Marina: Premier Marinas. Pontoon berths and semi-tidal pile moorings, with a fuel pontoon.
  • Endeavour Quay: Premier's boatyard at Gosport Marina. Its travel lift takes boats up to 40m long or 180 tonnes.
  • Royal Clarence Marina: Aquavista. 154 deep water berths in the former Royal Navy victualling yard, reached at all states of the tide.
  • Gosport Boat Yard: swinging moorings at Hardway for boats of 18ft to 50ft, some tidal or semi-tidal, and deep water moorings in Spider Lake for boats up to 36ft. A free ferry runs from Sultan Jetty at Hardway.
  • Hardway Sailing Club: swinging moorings for club members off its pontoon at Hardway.

On the water

  • Who is in charge: the King's Harbour Master, under the Dockyard Port of Portsmouth Order 2005. Laying a new mooring needs his permission, which is unlikely outside the established mooring areas.
  • Getting in and out: vessels under 20m use the Small Boat Channel, which runs from No 4 Bar Buoy to Ballast Beacon on the western side of the entrance. Keep to starboard and slow down sooner than overtake out of it.
  • At Ballast Beacon: boats coming in pass close to the east of it and boats leaving pass close to the west.
  • Tide: a strong cross-tide in the harbour mouth can sweep a small boat out of the channel into the main fairway. There is shallow water over Hamilton Bank.
  • Speed and radio: the harbour limit is 10 knots. Vessels over 20m call the King's Harbour Master on VHF Channel 11 before entering or leaving.

Portsmouth, across the harbour, and Fareham have their own pages.
