Devizes is a Wiltshire market town on the Kennet & Avon Canal, at the top of the Caen Hill flight of 29 locks. Moorings in Devizes are split by that flight: one marina and the town wharf sit above it, a larger marina sits at its foot, and the Canal & River Trust has its own long-term berths near the top.
Moorings in Devizes
- Devizes Marina Village: on Horton Avenue, above the Caen Hill locks. More than 80 leisure moorings and seven residential moorings, with a slipway, boat hoist and chandlery.
- Caen Hill Waterside & Marina (Aquavista): at Lower Foxhangers, Rowde, at the foot of the flight. Leisure, winter and visitor moorings, with diesel, pump-out and laundry.
- Devizes Flight (Canal & River Trust): finger pontoons for up to 15 narrowboats near the top of the flight, off the A361 Bath Road. Leisure use only, with electricity, water and pump-out.
- Bridge Inn, Horton (Canal & River Trust): about three miles from Devizes, a 140m pontoon mooring for up to seven boats. Leisure use only, with no services on site.
- Devizes Wharf: visitor moorings in the town by the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust museum, for short stays only.
On the water
The Canal & River Trust runs the canal. Every boat kept or used on it needs a Trust licence, and a Boat Safety Scheme certificate comes first. Between Bath and Reading the largest boat that fits is 21.95m long and 4m wide, with 1.1m draught and 2.4m headroom.
- Caen Hill flight: 29 locks rising 237 feet over two miles, 16 of them in the steepest part. A boat typically takes five to six hours.
- Opening hours: 8am to 4:30pm with last entry at 2pm from 1 April to 30 September, and 8am to 4pm with last entry at 1pm from 1 October to 31 March.
- Locks 29 and 44 are locked overnight, and there is no mooring between them. Volunteer lock keepers help boats through.
Floods and closures
The canal runs short of water in dry summers. Low water closed the summit pound east of Devizes on 27 and 28 June 2026, and a pound near Froxfield was low from 28 July to 29 August 2025. The Trust limits the Crofton flight to 9:30am to 3:30pm daily to save water. Check the Trust's notices before a trip in either direction.
