A closer look at Bradford-on-Avon

Bradford-on-Avon is a Wiltshire town on the Kennet & Avon Canal, a Canal & River Trust waterway. Moorings in Bradford-on-Avon are a marina on the Trowbridge Road at the edge of town, 48 hour visitor moorings around the lock and wharf, and a small Canal & River Trust leisure site at Avoncliff.

Moorings in Bradford-on-Avon

  • Bradford-on-Avon Marina: on the Trowbridge Road, under a mile along the canal from the lock. The town's visitor site describes a full marina service with boat sales and brokerage.
  • Avoncliff East (Canal & River Trust): five towpath moorings for leisure use beside Barton Farm Country Park, east of Avoncliff Aqueduct. Not for residential use, and parking nearby is limited.
  • Visitor moorings: the signed moorings at Bradford-on-Avon and Widbrook are limited to 48 hours.

On the water

  • Boat size: from Bath to Reading the Canal & River Trust gives a maximum of 21.95m (72ft) long and 4m (13ft 1in) wide, with a draught of 1.1m and 2.4m of headroom, so a wide beam boat can moor here.
  • Bradford Lock (Lock 14): rises 3.81m (12ft 6in) beside Bradford Wharf, where there is a water point, pump-out, Elsan and refuse disposal.
  • Aqueducts: Avoncliff Aqueduct, about a mile and a half from the lock, and Dundas Aqueduct beyond it each carry the canal over the River Avon and the railway.
  • Mooring rules: between Bath and Foxhangers rangers record moored boats daily. Staying past 48 hours, or more than seven days in a calendar month on the visitor moorings, brings an extended stay charge.
  • Winter: unless signed otherwise, the visitor mooring limit is relaxed to 14 days from 1 November to 31 March.

Floods and closures

Bradford Lock was closed or kept to short opening hours for low water three times in summer 2026: 20 to 22 July, 4 to 6 August and 25 to 28 August. In a dry summer, check the Canal & River Trust's notices before setting off.
